Building your Business
You may be starting a business from scratch or looking to build on a previous owners work, either way you cannot rely on business just turning up on your doorstep. A solid customer base and reputation left behind by the previous owner can evaporate with a new owner. Be confident in your abilities and make sure you do your research so when you do take that great step into your new business you can look forward to a profitable future.
Taking over from a previous owner has its advantages and pitfalls. Quite often an established customer base will have a lot of expectations on the new owner such as to keep the status quo with regards to opening times, prices, entertainment, items stocked, behaviour tolerance, keeping the wrong elements out and attracting the right type of customer in. Try to find that very delicate edge between listening to your inherited customers and keeping to your established and well-though out plans.
The importance of not reinventing the wheel cannot be overstated. If you try to figure everything out on your own you will most likely find yourself starting on the bottom of the pile, not a very financially viable position to be in for your new business. However, it is equally important not to follow others too closely as you will be nothing but a clone of their business. Learning from others and applying them to your business in your own style is the most effective way of boosting your customer numbers. There are many tactics used by business owners that are already tried and tested. Small café owners find it is very profitable to provide some form of food during the day as business may be a little slower and this is a great way to boost revenue.
Although you may be technically in competition with other businesses around you, the most effective way of boosting your business and your general business profile is to work together for the benefit of all. Try not to see yourself as an island in the business world. If customers are asking for something you can not supply, direct them to one of your neighbours who may be able to help them. This will keep more customers in the general area and of course your neighbours will be more than willing to do the same for you in the same situation.
