Themes and Design

While choosing the right bar, nightclub or restaurant is important, there are many other aspects that should be considered before you start, which only you can do (or you and your business partners if it is a joint venture.) The business you start or purchase may be in the right location but not necessarily have the right theme.

The theme of your business is important as it will attract a certain type of clientèle and determine how you operate. Do you want your business to be based on a very definite theme (e.g. a Caribbean bar, pirate restaurant or an internet café) or will it be more individual with unique furniture and a very personalised atmosphere?  There are advantages and pitfalls to all options but you should find which option suits you the best.

If your bar looks attractive and inviting from the outside customers will feel welcome and want to come in. Give plenty of thought to the external design of your business in terms of signage, the colour format you use and how this will make people feel. Take time to consider the furniture you will be using as this can have a huge impact on people’s first impression of your business. Visit other businesses in the same market as you to see how they operate and to get ideas about what works and whether you could do it as well (If your considering a nightclub or a bar it could be a lot of fun!)

Ask yourself whether the businesses look inviting and if so, why? Try to think what made you want to step inside and spend some time in there. If it does not look very welcoming then ask yourself what is it that puts you off. This can very often make or break a business as if your customers do not experience your ‘inner charm’ by not coming in the bar in the first place, it can be hard to build up a good solid customer base.
